The Philadelphia Eagles are the defending Super Bowl champions but to stay there, they need to evolve. The last championship was filled with long-term deals for the players that helped them win the title in 2017 and it led Philadelphia down a dark path where they sank toward the bottom of the NFC East.

This time around, the Eagles have made some difficult decisions, including letting Milton Williams, Josh Sweat, and Mekhi Becton walk in free agency. It’s also led to some big names on the trading block as Philadelphia approaches the NFL Draft.

One name figures to be more likely to be traded than others, and it could lead a playmaker to be involved in a draft night trade as the Eagles prepare to go on the clock.

Eagles Could Trade Dallas Goedert During NFL Draft

Dallas Goedert has been one of the Eagles’ most productive players since arriving in the 2018 NFL Draft. But the South Dakota State product could be on the trading block as the Eagles look to get younger and cheaper at the tight end position.

Goedert is one of the top tight ends in terms of production since coming into the league. He ranks sixth in receiving yards (4,085), seventh in receptions (349), and ninth in touchdowns (24) dating back to 2018 and claimed his first Super Bowl ring in February. At 30 years old, there’s a good chance his best football is left in him, but there are some questions.

The biggest one is his health. Goedert hasn’t played a full season since his rookie year and missed seven games with a broken hand last year. As a result, his production dropped to 42 catches for 496 yards and two touchdowns during Philadelphia’s run to the Super Bowl.

Goedert is also due for a new contract. The 30-year-old has no guaranteed money left on his four-year, $57 million contract extension signed in 2021 and is set to become a free agent after next season. While he may not be able to get the four-year, $76 million contract extension that Trey McBride signed with the Arizona Cardinals, he could seek something in excess of the four-year, $48.4 million contract Pat Freiermuth signed with the Pittsburgh Steelers in 2024.

If the Eagles balk at this price, it could lead them to put Goedert on the trade block. The New York Giants were reportedly interested in trading for Goedert, but the Indianapolis Colts, Los Angeles Chargers, Los Angeles Rams, and New York Jets could also be teams interested in upgrading at tight end.

It may be perfect timing for Philadelphia to make a move. This year’s tight end class is a strong one with Penn State’s Tyler Warren and Michigan’s Colston Loveland as the headliners. But Miami’s Elijah Arroyo, LSU’s Mason Taylor, and Oregon’s Terrance Ferguson could all be suitable replacements for Goedert if they decide to make the trade.

It’s a deal that wouldn’t be easy to make from an emotional standpoint. But it may be the best way for the Eagles to continue their evolution as they look to add another Lombardi Trophy in the near future.
