The Philadelphia Eagles appeared to make a statement in last Sunday's 20-17 ugly win in Arrowhead in a Super Bowl rematch. The Eagles dared the Chiefs to beat them through the air and focused on shortening these opportunities by pounding the football and focusing on short passing that helped eat the clock. Philly accomplished this without the benefit of starting tight end Dallas Goedert, who missed the game with a knee sprain that was suffered in Week 1 against the Dallas Cowboys.
Goedert's injury served as an opportunity for Grant Calcaterra, who had limited expectations heading into Week 2. Even with expectations low, the veteran tight end found a way to disappoint. Every phase of the game was a clear failure as Calcaterra finished the night with one catch for six yards. It wasn't just the lack of production, but the fact that Calcaterra looked completely lost within Philly's offense.
Eagles' Weakest Link in Week 2 Win Unquestionably Was Backup Tight End Grant Calcaterra
Calcaterra finished with the worst offense grade on Pro Football Focus, clocking in at a mark of 44.9. What makes this so frustrating is that the Philly offense has a lot of playmakers who should set Calcaterra up for success by taking the heat off him. He has no excuse for such an abysmal performance.
Eagles fans are now questioning if the team needs to go out and make a move at tight end. A decision that general manager Howie Roseman is unquestionably already weighing as the league's most aggressive decision-maker when it comes to improving his team. Roseman needs very little excuse to go out and search for upgrades, but he might have to act soon.
There's no question that Calcaterra should be incredibly concerned about his current standing and whether or not the Eagles will consider making a change. It is at least on the radar with Goedert aging and the backup position growing increasingly relevant. Perhaps fellow TE Kylen Granson could be given more opportunities to prove his worth.
The Eagles aren't afraid to make a move, but it must be the right fit with free agency bare at the position and no obvious trade fits jumping off the page. Still, there is no denying that Calcaterra's performance was incredibly alarming and one of the few concerning pieces of Philly's clutch win.
