The Philadelphia Eagles have done a good job up to this point of avoiding serious injuries heading into the second week of preseason. The only huge injury of note right now is the right meniscus of Pro Bowl guard Landon Dickerson.

However, the hope is that Dickerson will be back on the field when the Eagles kick off the season on September 4 against the Dallas Cowboys. At the same time, Philadelphia is also keeping an eye on several players’ injury statuses, including star wide receiver A.J. Brown.

The star wideout has been hampered by a hamstring injury that he sustained at the beginning of this month, which has forced him to miss some practice time. On Wednesday, Tim McManus of ESPN reported that Brown was one of four Eagles who didn’t practice after he was limited the previous two days.

Ahead of their second joint practice, Eagles head coach Nick Sirianni provided another update on Brown, but it leaves room for interpretation.

According to McManus, Sirianni wouldn’t say if the star pass catcher had a setback after he sat out of Wednesday’s practice. The Eagles’ head coach added that Brown “is working through some things,” but the goal is to have everyone ready for the start of the season.

It’s not surprising to see the Eagles take this approach, as soft-tissue injuries involving the hamstring could linger if not properly treated. Philadelphia would rather take the rest of the preseason to get Brown right and not rush him back to practice. The Eagles’ starters do not play in the preseason, so most of the work the first-team will get is in joint practices and regular practice.

The Eagles would love to have Brown back on the field and ready to go for the home opener, as he’s become one of the best WRs in the league since arriving in Philadelphia. Brown won’t burn you with his speed, but he has a nice combo of size, acceleration, and run-after-the-catch ability to create an explosive play in the passing game.

Over his three years with the Eagles, Brown has gone over the 1,000-yard threshold every time. Last year, Brown missed a few games due to injury, but still turned in 67 receptions (97 targets) for 1,079 yards and seven touchdowns.

That said, with Brown still nursing the hamstring injury, it could be a good opportunity for Jahan Dotson to get more reps in practice, as this is a pivotal year for the former first-round pick.

If the Eagles can get Brown, Devonta Smith, and Dotson playing at a high level, this passing game could go to new heights. However, first things first, the Eagles need Brown to be at 100% by Week 1.
