The Philadelphia Eagles' pursuit of a new offensive coordinator has been as quiet as it has been unimpressive. The two main names to watch, Brian Daboll and Mike McDaniel, have either taken another job or shown an interest in a bigger position.
Now, Eagles reporter Jeff McLane of The Philadelphia Inquirer reports that they've met with former Kansas City Chiefs offensive coordinator Matt Nagy. And, while he makes sense as a potential candidate due to Nagy's two Super Bowl rings, it just goes to show that the Eagles' offensive coordinator job was never a coveted one.
Eagles' OC Search Has Been Underwhelming
"Nagy’s contract with Kansas City expires soon. He would have play-calling authority in Philly, unlike he’s had under Andy Reid," McLane wrote on X. "Nagy was once an Eagles assistant and for one brief moment a training camp QB."
While it makes sense that Daboll would rather take the Buffalo Bills' head coaching position if it becomes available, watching McDaniel leave to be an offensive coordinator somewhere else goes to show that the top names either don't want to work with head coach Nick Sirianni or the Eagles' once-stacked offense isn't as appealing to coaches as the fans thought.
Nagy does have some head-coaching experience, and while he was interviewed for the Tennessee Titans' head coaching position in this cycle, the fact of the matter is he's never been considered a top-tier offensive coordinator.
If anything, he's drawn heavy criticism for the Chiefs' offensive regression since he took over from ex-OC Eric Bieniemy. Moreover, Reid didn't even seem interested in signing him to a contract extension, as the Chiefs replaced him almost right away.
The Chiefs averaged just 320.6 total yards per game this season, which ranked 20th in the league. They were 16th in passing yards per game (214.1), 25th in rushing yards per game (106.6), 21st in points per game (21.3), and 22nd in third-down conversion percentage (37.4%).
Granted, some of that was also personnel-related, and Reid was the offensive play-caller, not Nagy. Even so, if that's what he could do with one of the best quarterbacks in the game, he may not do much better in Philadelphia.
To add insult to injury, neither of the other candidates is a big name either. At the time of writing, the Eagles have also interviewed Jim Bob Cooter (Indianapolis Colts OC), Bobby Slowik (former Houston Texans OC), and Josh Grizzard (former Tampa Bay Buccaneers OC) for the position.
Maybe one of those guys will work out for the Eagles, maybe they won't. Only one thing is for sure: Philadelphia's offensive coordinator search is off to a poor start, and that needs to change soon if the fan base is going to have any hope.
