When the Philadelphia Eagles signed former Pro Bowl linebacker Devin White to a one-year deal in the 2024 offseason, it was considered to be a bargain contract for a talented defender. It was an excellent opportunity for a former star who had fallen out of favor in Tampa Bay to revive his career and help a Super Bowl contender. It was as low-risk, high-reward as a free agent signing could get.

Yet, it quickly devolved into a high-risk, low-reward situation. On Tuesday, the Eagles finally decided that they didn't want to deal with the headache and released White.

NFL News: Eagles Release LB Devin White

Through five weeks, White hadn't made his season debut with the Eagles. He started the season on the injury list but even after his return, he was considered a backup to third-year defender Nakobe Dean.

This must have come as a surprise to White who has been voicing his dissatisfaction with the team since the start of the season.

White's frustration can be understandable. The former Bucs star presumably wouldn't have signed with the Eagles if he knew he would be a backup.

At the same time, this is not the first time the 26-year-old caused drama or had disciplinary issues with a team. Last season, as he was playing out the final year of his contract, he saw his snaps significantly reduced and was eventually demoted in favor of K.J. Britt. White later admitted that playing for a contract affected his concentration and negatively impacted his production.

Whether another team will willingly take White on after knowing about the drama that seems to follow him everywhere remains to be seen. He probably has enough of an upside to justify a flyer but Eagles fans will certainly be happy to not deal with him anymore.
