The Philadelphia Eagles are seeking to find more talent via the NFL Draft. After securing the Super Bowl title, the Eagles have made it a priority to extend key players on the roster. That list includes Zack Baun, Saquon Barkley, Lane Johnson, and most recently, Cam Jurgens.
GM Howie Roseman made it his mission to keep these players around, but that won't be the case for everyone on the team. Tight end Dallas Goedert is someone who has been floated in trade talks and gets moved in this scenario.
Before getting into the actual deal, there is some context around Goedert. It's been reported that Roseman wants to move him ahead of the draft for a 2025 pick, but that hasn't moved bidders enough.
If the Eagles trade him after June 1st, they would save around $4.05 million and take on a $7.7 million dead cap hit. However, if they traded him prior to June 1st, they would get hit with a $21.39 million dead cap hit.
Granted, the Eagles have $22 million available in cap space, so they could absorb the dead cap hit if they wanted, especially if they do some contract restructures to create some additional cap space.
While the Eagles are seeking a 2025 draft pick in return, they are likely going to receive one in 2026, and the New York Jets seem like a logical landing spot.
The New York Jets badly need to improve their tight end room after they lost Tyler Conklin in free agency. They only have Jeremy Ruckert on the team and have been linked to multiple tight ends in this draft cycle, mostly Penn State TE Tyler Warren.
Goedert is also looking to looking for an extension, and that could be something New York offers him, considering they have $27 million available in cap space. Philadelphia can't afford to pay everyone, and it looks like Goedert will be getting the short end of that stick.
The Jets need to improve that position group badly ahead of the 2025 season, and Goedert fits the bill. New York has the trade compensation it will take to get a deal across the finish line, while Philadelphia gets another draft added to its collection.
