Eagles Coordinator Shuts Down Head Coaching Buzz
By Joe Summers
The Eagles are focused on making a deep playoff run starting with an NFC Wild Card showdown with the Packers, though they're already facing potential distractions as the head coaching carousel got underway this week.
Defensive coordinator Vic Fangio, who has done a spectacular job in his first year with the organization and has head coaching experience, is a candidate who could draw some buzz around the league.
Thankfully, he seemingly shut those rumors down when speaking to the media on Tuesday. Offensive coordinator Kellen Moore is being interviewed and could leave, but at least Fangio sounds like he's staying for the foreseeable future.
Eagles DC Vic Fangio Dismisses Head Coaching Rumors
After being asked whether he had interest in becoming a head coach again, Fangio dismissed the suggestion and said he was happy in Philadelphia "right now." That's admittedly dodging the question a bit, and Fangio could potentially want another chance down the road, yet fans shouldn't be concerned about that happening soon.
The 66-year-old veteran leader compiled just a 19-30 record in three seasons coaching the Broncos but is one of the most respected defensive coordinators in the NFL. He's led a defense that currently leads the league in opponent yards per play (4.7) just one year after ranking in the bottom 10 (5.5), so it's obvious that he's capable of quickly turning a group around.
However, his shortcomings in other areas created his failed tenure in Denver. Fangio has a good thing going with a young, ascending unit in Philadelphia and it makes sense to continue in his current position. The Eagles look poised to compete for Lombardi Trophies for years to come and he's a big part of that equation.
Should Fangio entertain interviews, it's still unlikely another team would choose him over some of the more exciting candidates available. Luckily for the organization, the perfect fit goes both ways.
As it stands, Philadelphia is a 4.5-point home favorite over Green Bay and holds the fifth-best odds (+650) to win the Super Bowl at FanDuel Sportsbook. Should the Eagles get the job done, Fangio's remarkable effort will be one of the largest reasons why.
