Eagles Show They Can't Quit Kenyon Green Just Yet in Week 3

The Philadelphia Eagles have been known for reclamation projects over the past year, but while they can hang their hat on Zack Baun and Mekhi Becton, Kenyon Green is a different story.

Green was acquired in an offseason trade with the Houston Texans, and the hope was that he could fill the void left by Becton’s departure to the Los Angeles Chargers. Green failed to seize the starting role at right guard and didn’t last long on the active roster, getting waived at the end of training camp. He's since been assigned to the practice squad after a Week 1 release and has yet to make his 2025 debut.

That decision seemed to hint that Green’s tenure in Philadelphia would be over before it started. But just before the Eagles battled the Los Angeles Rams in Week 3, they showed they aren’t ready to throw in the towel by announcing that they elevated Green to the active roster on Wednesday.

Kenyon Green Given Another Opportunity to Stick with Eagles

Green’s promotion is another opportunity for him to stick in Philadelphia. A former first-round pick by the Texans in the 2022 draft, Green battled injuries and ineffectiveness before being sent to the Eagles in exchange for safety C.J. Gardner-Johnson. While Green got the chance to work with offensive line coach Jeff Stoutland, he floundered during the preseason with an overall grade of 52.8, according to Pro Football Focus.

While it was an overall struggle, Green showed enough in pass protection with just one pressure in 34 pass-blocking snaps. But after the Eagles declared Tyler Steen the winner of the right guard competition, Green watched Week 1 from the sidelines before he was released and signed to the practice squad for Week 2.

Green would need something to happen to Steen to see the field; however, the veteran blocker also hasn’t proven himself to be an insurmountable challenge. Steen has done well in pass protection, allowing three pressures and a sack on 61 pass-blocking snaps this preseason. At the same time, he hasn’t been as effective in the running game with a 55.0 grade, including a mark of 49.0 in last week’s win over the Kansas City Chiefs.

In all likelihood, Green's promotion is likely a depth move in case someone were to get banged up. Conversely, perhaps the Eagles aren’t ready to put their ego aside and admit the Green trade was a failure, although he hasn’t done much to indicate a turnaround is coming.

Green's potential bounce-back showing could play out in Sunday’s game against the Rams, but it also could be another case of musical chairs as the Eagles figure out their offensive line.
