It is rare for the Philadelphia Eagles to miss on a move; however, the front office isn't afraid to pivot away from a move they don't believe is working. This is exactly what happened with Kenyon Green, with the guard becoming a surprise roster cut after being added early in the offseason.

As a part of Philly's efforts to manage cap space, C.J. Gardner-Johnson was dealt to the Texans in exchange for Green and a 6th-round pick. It made sense opening up the needed cap space to reset the roster and bring in valued depth.

Depth that has now been cut as part of final roster moves, with young pieces impressing the Eagles more so than the former Texan. While Green is just a depth piece, cutting the experienced option was a rare mistake. One that will only be exposed if the Eagles deal with injuries at the position throughout the 2025 season.

With this in mind, it is very likely that Green's departure doesn't haunt the franchise and is quickly forgotten. Still, it is an odd decision with the lineman's experience offering a clear advantage over the remaining options.

The Eagles Made a Mistake Cutting Depth Offensive Lineman Kenyon Green

It is important to note that Philly has a recent history of developing the offensive line, even finding a way to replace franchise legend Jason Kelce ahead of its Super Bowl run. Doubting the offensive decision-making is dangerous. Green getting cut is a bit of a surprise and does open a fair number of questions.

Gardner-Johnson's departure is now completely based on the ability to free up cap space to make further moves. This did help set up the Saquon Barkley extension and the Eagles being able to keep the bulk of their core intact. Still, it would be far better if Green had made the final roster and was able to be a part of the depth moving forward. Cutting the guard without giving him more time in Philly's strong offensive system was a mistake.

Not one that is likely to haunt or cost the franchise, but still a rare misstep that is worth noting. The rest of the Philly roster played out as expected without any major surprises. It appears the franchise is poised to defend its title with incredible depth on both sides of the ball. Depth that would be just a bit better if the Eagles had kept Green for the 2025 season.
