Disliked Eagle May Be Benched for Good After Latest Injury News
By Joe Summers
Prized Eagles offseason acquisition Bryce Huff has endured a miserable season relative to expectations and unfortunately, he may be permanently benched following this week's injury news.
Huff has appeared in 10 games but played only 37% of the snaps after signing a three-year, $51 million deal in the offseason. The defensive end underwent a procedure on his wrist on Thursday, with the hope being that he can return for the end of the year and potential playoff run.
That said, Huff may not have a spot in the rotation should players like Nolan Smith, Brandon Graham, Jalyx Hunt, and Josh Sweat prove capable of handling the workload.
Eagles DE Bryce Huff May Stay Benched After Injury News
Philadelphia's defensive performance has been superb, ranking second in the NFL in opponent yards per play (4.7) after allowing 5.5 last season. The young, improved secondary has a lot to do with the turnaround, but Huff was supposed to play a role too.
He hasn't, compiling just 10 tackles and 2.5 sacks while drawing the ire of fans. Huff notched 10 sacks in 2023 yet hasn't made a consistent impact for his new team.
The Eagles are likely stuck with him and his over $29 million dead cap hit next year, though general manager Howie Roseman has a potential out if he wants to move on from Huff after the 2025 campaign. If Huff isn't able to make an impact, his contract will loom large on Roseman's ability to improve the team in the offseason.
Regardless, this has been a wildly disappointing season for Huff. Still only 26 years old, he has plenty of time to justify his large salary. That time is dwindling though, and injuries like this one don't help matters.
Despite Huff's struggles, the Eagles are in the driver's seat of the NFC East with the fifth-best odds (+800) to win the Super Bowl over at FanDuel Sportsbook.
