There has been a level of speculation with the Philadelphia Eagles' recent struggles in the secondary; perhaps a reunion is in order. Former Philly safety C.J. Gardner-Johnson had a short-lived stint with the Houston Texans before the franchise quickly turned the page. Much of this is due to the fact that Gardner-Johnson speaks his mind and plays with a level of recklessness that can wear thin over time. In the right landing spot, the defensive back can be a tone setter. However, the attitude and edge appear to quickly wear out a franchise. Leading to the safety tweeting out an interesting comment as he remains a free agent.
""I just want to take a moment to thank all the teams I’ve been a part of coaches, teammates, and everyone who’s supported me along the way. Every experience has helped me grow both on and off the field. I’m truly grateful for all the opportunities and memories. Football has always been a big part of who I am, and my passion for the game is still strong. I’m excited to keep working, improving, and continuing to play the sport I love.""C.J. Gardner-Johnson
Perhaps learning from his Houston release, the surprise comment from the safety is clearly aimed in the Eagles' direction. It appears to have been put out in hopes of showing growth and earning a bit more interest in free agency. Philly is obviously in the market for potential secondary upgrades, with the biggest need being at the corner position. However, it still makes some sense to consider a reunion on a contract that the Eagles can easily escape.
Former Eagles Safety C.J. Gardner-Johnson Attempting to Charm Philly into Reunion
If the Eagles are exploring all avenues to attempt to improve, it makes sense to offer the defender a deal that is not guaranteed. It isn't as if the safety has an overwhelming number of choices, and Philly can actually offer him the chance to contribute. Already, there is room to wonder if there is any bad blood based on the fact that it was only this past offseason that Gardner-Johnson was dealt to Houston in an attempt to open up more cap space.
The two sides coming back together would have to be on Philly's terms, even with the latest comments in mind. Under no circumstances can you hand out a deal that is going to be difficult to escape when the first problem arises. Already, you're dealing with the distractions that star receiver A.J. Brown is creating for the players and coaching staff.
It is an organization that simply cannot afford any more distractions or locker room issues. With this in mind, Gardner-Johnson's comment should be taken with a grain of salt. Understanding the angle of it and still giving the potential signing very careful consideration. It remains on the table, but it isn't a decision the team can lightly reach.
