A.J. Brown Finally Breaks Silence on Drama After Eagles Comments
By Cem Yolbulan
Despite winning their ninth straight game, improving to 11-2, clinching a playoff berth, and firmly establishing themselves as a true Super Bowl contender, the Philadelphia Eagles have found themselves embroiled in serious drama.
After the unconvincing Week 14 win over the Carolina Panthers, star wide receiver A.J. Brown seemingly called out Jalen Hurts, criticizing the team's passing. More fuel was added to the fire in the ensuing days, including by Eagles legend Brandon Graham who said the relationship between Hurts and Brown had changed.
Brown finally addressed the media on Wednesday and told his part of the story. Per NBC Sports Philadelphia's John Clark, the Pro Bowl wide receiver said his comment was not about Hurts but rather the "passing attack" as a whole.
Eagles News: AJ Brown Walks Back Comments on Jalen Hurts
In Brown's defense, he didn't call out Hurts by name. When asked what the problem was about Sunday's performance, Brown bluntly replied, "Passing. What we did today is not good enough. It won't help us".
Even though it was understandably received as a shot at Jalen Hurts, since he is the one passing the ball, Brown could have been talking about a more widespread problem. The passing game requires the entire team including snapping, blocking, and getting open. The offensive line, the running back, and the tight end are all part of the attack, not just the quarterback.
Brown is also right in pointing out the disastrous passing attack. The Eagles passed for only 83 yards against a lowly Panthers defense. They didn't need much offense against the 3-10 Panthers but they will certainly need more from the passing game against better opponents.
Brown's comments will hopefully mark the end of this saga. Disagreements happen on every team, but they must stay in the locker room. The Eagles have a Super Bowl to win, it's time to focus on the task at hand.
