The Philadelphia Eagles will have some tough decisions to make in the coming days as roster cutdown day is upon us. Teams have until 4 p.m. on Aug. 26 to get their roster down to 53 players for the 2025 season.
The Eagles are wrapping up the preseason on Aug. 22 against the New York Jets, and there will be several players fighting for their jobs in this contest. Not everyone will be able to make the cut, and here are three players who are going to get released after the finale.
1. Avery Williams, WR
Williams joined the Eagles on a one-year deal back in March. This is his fifth year in the league, and he has been with the Atlanta Falcons for the first four years. He entered the league as a running back, logging 109 rushing yards and one score. As a pass catcher, Williams had 13 catches for 61 yards.
Meanwhile, as a returner has logged 1,211 kick return yards, 630 punt return yards in his career. Despite these stats, he hasn't been able to make a big difference in Philadelphia. In the preseason opener, he had 15 punt return yards and 11 punt return yards in Week 2 against the Browns.
His lack of explosion in that area, while being an underwhelming WR, it's clear to see that he'll get released by Philadelphia.
2. Dorian Thompson-Robinson, QB
Thompson-Robinson got traded to the Eagles back in March in exchange for Kenny Pickett. While it's clear that Jalen Hurts and Tanner McKee are the QB1 and 2, it's a battle for the QB3 spot between DTR and Kyle McCord.
Even though he's been around a couple of months, Thompson-Robinson has been a massive disappointment. His performance in last week's preseason game against the Browns was a step in the wrong direction.
In the loss to the Browns, he went 5-of-8 for 17 passing yards and one interception. The 25-year-old came into the league as a fifth-round pick but has been disappointing. In 15 games with the Browns, Thompson-Robinson went 121-of-230 (52.6%) for 880 passing yards, one touchdown, and 10 interceptions.
He has had several opportunities to prove what he can do, but you can see the Eagles giving Kyle McCord the chance to develop more. Especially since Philadelphia used a 2025 sixth-round pick on McCord. They made a dart throw with the trade for Thompson-Robinson, but it hasn't worked out. And you can see the pathway for him to be elsewhere.
3. Tariq Castro-Fields, CB
Philadelphia made a lot of moves in the secondary this offseason after moving on from Darius Slay and Isaiah Rodgers in free agency.
That led to additions of Jakorian Bennett, A.J. Woods, Mac McWilliams, and Adoree' Jackson this offseason. Defensive coordinator Vic Fangio has made it known that the battle for CB3 is wide open, as no one has claimed the spot.
It seems to be a battle between Kelee Ringo, McWilliams, and Jackson. Despite there being no clear winner at this point, Castro-Fields was never in the comp to begin with. And now he's dealing with a hamstring injury that is sidelining him from practice.
He was fighting to claim one of the last depth options on the team, but with him dealing with an iffy injury like a hamstring right now, it's a huge step back. Every rep and practice is crucial for him.
Castro-Fields played for the Panthers last season for two games before getting waived. The only time he got any type of playing time came in 2023 with the Washington Commanders. In eight games (one start), he finished with a 29.4 overall grade (226th among 229 graded corners), 48.8 run-defense grade (186th among 229 graded corners), and a 29.2 coverage grade (223rd among 229 graded corners).
His disappointing track record in addition to his hamstring injury and the arrow is pointing towards Castro-Fields getting axed.
