3 Eagles Playing Their Final December in Philadelphia

Barring any unforeseen surprises down the stretch, there's a good chance that these three Philadelphia Eagles are spending their final December in Philly.

We're nearly halfway through December, meaning the NFL playoffs are almost here.

The Philadelphia Eagles are on track to make some noise this postseason, heading into Week 15 with an NFC East-leading 11-2 record thanks to a nine-game win streak. Needless to say, this year's Eagles have had plenty to celebrate, however, those celebratory times will likely end soon for a handful of players.

After all, the playoffs' arrival means that the offseason is nearly here, too. Like all NFL franchises, the Eagles will undergo various roster changes after the season ends and while certain players will likely return in 2025, others are playing in the City of Brotherly Love on borrowed time.

Let's discuss who's likely on the way out by looking at these three Eagles who are playing their final December in Philadelphia.

1. Avonte Maddox, CB

Avonte Maddox is currently in his seventh season with the Eagles. Although the former 2018 fourth-rounder has provided Philadelphia fans with some decent memories in past years, his 2024 performance has done anything but that and it's at the point where he's likely played himself out of the franchise's future.

Maddox has played to an abysmal 49.2 coverage grade through 13 games, according to Pro Football Focus. He's finished with a mark of 46.2 or worse in each of the last two weeks, further illustrating why quarterbacks love to target any receiver he's covering.

It's also the second straight season where Maddox is played to a sub-.50.0 defense grade (48.6), as well as the third time in the last five seasons. He'll still come up with a pass break-up now and then, however, it's clear that he isn't the player he once was and that likely won't change due to his age (28).

With Maddox set to hit free agency, there's a good chance that his Eagles tenure is ending soon. He's played just 62 defensive snaps since Week 5 (compared to 213 in his first four games), showing that Nick Sirianni's staff has already begun phasing him out, meaning Maddox will likely be on the outside looking in next year.
