3. Jalen Carter

One major storyline on the other side of the ball for Philadelphia is which young player steps during the 2023 season. If the early trends continue, it very well could be Jalen Carter.

The first-round pick has entered camp in great shape, and he’s showing every reason why he was once a contender to be the No.1 overall pick. He’s had little struggles using his size and athleticism to bully NFL talent from the get go, which saying something considering the Eagles’ offensive line is one of their best strengths.

Carter even reportedly manhandled two players who tried to double team at one of the team’s very first practices.

He hasn’t just dominated out of pads, either. In Philly’s first fully padded practice on Tuesday, Carter went toe-to-toe with Cam Jurgens. The rookie and vet played to a “stalemate,” according to Ed Kracz of Sports Illustrated, which is impressive on its own. But Carter also “got the better” of Jurgens on one rep, and the latter later admitted there’s things he can learn from the No. 9 pick in practice.

The buzz around Philadelphia is that Carter could be one of Howie Roseman’s greatest heists ever. There was obviously some risk with the selecting the former Georgia Bulldog considering his off-the-field troubles, but the Eagles were the perfect well-run environment to keep him focused.

Though it’s early, Carter is well on his way to competing for a starting role on this defense. It’s no surprise, then, that he’s one of the leading favorites for Defensive Rookie of the Year.
