3 Phillies Who Won’t Survive the Trade Deadline
By Tyler Maher
2. Edmundo Sosa
The Phillies traded for Sosa ahead of last year’s deadline and the move worked out beautifully. Sosa hit .315/.345/.593 the rest of the way, helping Philly make the playoffs and ultimately reach the World Series.
This season has been a different story for Sosa, however. The 27-year-old third baseman has regressed back into a below-average hitter, slashing .249/.274/.407 with nearly as many strikeouts (45) as hits (47).
That’s almost exactly in line with Sosa’s career numbers (.252/.308/.386), so it’s clear the Phillies caught lightning in a bottle last year. And it’s also clear that lightning isn’t striking twice. They’ve given him a pretty long leash in 2023 with nearly 200 plate appearances, but it’s not working out.
With 0.1 WAR this season, Sosa’s the definition of a replacement player. That makes him extremely expendable and unlikely to be still on the team after Aug. 1. Let’s allow some other team to roll the dice on trying to somehow recreate Sosa’s late-season magic from 2022.
