3) Former Phillies catcher Andrew Knapp is failing miserably in 2022

Maybe the least expected of failures has come from Andrew Knapp. For years, he was the backup catcher for the Phillies. It all began in 2017 when he showed some positive signs by hitting .257/.368/.368 in his 204 plate appearances. After that, it was mostly downhill.

Knapp ended his tenure with the Phillies last year miserably by hitting .152/.215/.214. Things couldn’t possibly get worse. Somehow, they have.

Knapp began the year with the Pittsburgh Pirates where he batted .129/.229/.161 in 35 trips to the plate. He was eventually released and signed up with the Seattle Mariners. Hitless in his first two trips to the plate for them, he was already hitting below the Mendoza Line while in Triple-A.

Due to injuries to their other catchers, he should get a chance to play as the backup in Seattle. Unfortunately, it may only seal his fate as a future roving journeyman backup catcher whose final years in professional baseball might be spend signing a new minor league contract each year.

The success Garrett Stubbs has had this year behind J.T. Realmuto has been a pleasant surprise. Fans lost a lot of faith that backup catchers were anything more than a warm body. Knapp was not an ideal fit for the one to hold the clipboard behind the starting catcher.
