2) Former Phillies pitcher Archie Bradley is failing miserably in 2022

Archie Bradley was a very productive member of last year’s Phillies bullpen. He tossed 51 innings for them while going 7-3 with a 3.71 ERA. The relief corps was the team’s biggest weakness. Bradley was often able to stop the bleeding or at least provide a tourniquet.

It made a lot of sense for the Phillies to look at bringing Bradley back in 2022. He’s still under 30-years-old and could have been someone they’d lock into a two-year deal. Instead, Bradley got a one-year offer from the Los Angeles Angels worth $3.75 million that he took. Surprisingly, it was much less than the $6 million the Phillies paid him in 2021.

Money aside, it might not have been such a bad idea to avoid him.

Bradley has been one of several misses the Angels made in free agency. The team made some huge changes with their starting rotation and bullpen. Many haven’t worked out, including Bradley.

Through his first 18.2 innings of work, Bradley is 0-1 with a 4.82 ERA. He has a 3.32 FIP which may hint that he has been a little unlucky but this is probably more due to the fact that he has only allowed one home run. Bradley has mostly been a “plain” reliever this year for the Angels. His past success, mostly with the Arizona Diamondbacks, looks to have taken this year off.

Worst of all, he literally broke his elbow during the recent brawl between the Angels and Seattle Mariners when he fell over the railing. There are injuries you take with pride and then there are ones like this that you know will land on a blooper reel once you’ve fully recovered. Until we can all laugh about it, we send him our best.
