Jean Segura

If you’re looking to get sneaky late in your draft, Jean Segura could be your guy. He’s good enough that he could be your starting second baseman if you decide not to prioritize the position and allow him fall to you late. Or he can be a valuable utility/bench bat, since he’s likely to approach .300 with a homer total in the teens and double-digit steals this year. His regular spot in the batting order will factor into determining his value, so hopefully, you have an idea of how he stands by the time your draft rolls around. But as of now, he’s a good value pick in the 18th round or later.

Alec Bohm

What a difference a year makes, as people were high on Alec Bohm following his excellent 2020 debut. But Bohm’s 2021 was so bad that it cast a pall over his fantasy outlook and quite possibly his actual future in Philadelphia as a cornerstone player. I personally say it’s too early for the Phillies to give up on him, even though they might not listen to me in that regard. In fantasy, though, I definitely don’t recommend him until he shows some kind of clue what he’s doing at the plate. If you want to take a stab at him in the last couple rounds as a bench bat, go for it. I wouldn’t at the moment.

The elephant in the room here is Bryson Stott. Depending on the timing of your draft, Stott may actually have established himself as the favorite to get playing time at the hot corner. If it’s looking like he’s about to usurp Bohm, don’t be afraid to jump on Stott starting around the 16th round. He could be a big-time sleeper in this lineup.

Didi Gregorius

In a league replete with exciting, star shortstops…the Phillies do not have one. But here’s Didi Gregorius, and he’s actually swinging the bat well so far this spring. If your league is deep and you have to fill up your last middle infield/bench spot, I suppose he could be useful as a guy you aren’t expecting much from. And maybe he even gets an RBI boost thanks to the offensive talent around him. Let’s just call him a “last round” kind of guy, and maybe you get a nice return.

Center Fielders

I was originally going to address the rest of the hitters on the roster by saying “everybody else”. But with apologies to Johan Camargo and company, let’s just focus on the center fielders. Odubel Herrera has actually had fantasy value in the past, but I wouldn’t trust him at all to get back to the kind of form he was showing about three years ago. Pass. Matt Vierling, on the other hand, offers a little bit of fantasy intrigue, and I wouldn’t criticize you for a final round dart throw at him.

But, wait a minute, is that Mickey Moniak‘s entrance music? Crazier things have happened, so perhaps the guy we’ve already stuck the huge “bust” label on can show us something yet. He’s still just 23, after all. I wouldn’t have taken a chance on him at this exact moment, but be ready to snatch him off waivers early if he earns playing time.
