3. Zach Ertz’s back and blonder than ever

More from Section 215

After having one foot out the hypothetical trade door all summer long, Zach Ertz made his return to the Novacare Center for his ninth straight Training Camp with the Philadelphia Eagles, now sporting a blonder, fohawk-ier head of hair.

Once upon a time, this felt like a borderline impossibility, but here we are, in July of 2021, and Ertz is not only still a member of the Eagles but actually at camp with his teammates sans any sort of holdout.

What can I say, the NFL is a weird, weird place sometimes.

With Dallas Goedert expected to take a step forward and fully serve as the Eagles’ starting tight end from here on out, it’ll be interesting to see how Ertz is utilized over the summer and into the 2021 NFL season, that is, unless he’s shipped out of town a la Jordan Matthews in 2017, maybe even to Buffalo as well.

Now that the chances of Ertz being outright waived heading into the season are essentially over, finding a way to get the ex-Stanford Cardinal contributing on the field in a positive way has to be priority number one for all parties involved, as it presents the best chance to get the Eagles’ a few more win and their once-franchise tight end a decent free agency when he hits the open market in 2022.

But for now, that doesn’t really matter. Whether Ertz plays zero, eight, or 16 games for the Philadelphia Eagles in 2021 really isn’t all that pressing. What is right here and now, on the first day of camp, is that Ertz is here and won’t be a distraction heading into a very vital summer in South Philly. That alone is a welcomed sight.

Bonus takeaway: According to Ruben Frank, the Philadelphia Eagles boast a 90 percent vaccination rate, which is among the best marks in the entire league. Very cool.
