PFF names the Philadelphia Eagles as having a bottom-5 roster in the NFL
By David Esser
Not the greatest of news to catch up to on a Friday morning!
According to Pro Football Focus‘ Ben Linsey, the Philadelphia Eagles have one of the top-5 worst rosters in all of football. Despite some of the hype that Eagles fans have been generating for the team moving forward, PFF in particular has remained consistent in their viewpoint that the organization is actually headed for yet another disaster-filled regular season.
Here’s how their bottom-5 rankings ended up panning out:
I don’t think anyone is really going to argue with the Texans, Lions, and Jets being named as having the three worst rosters in the NFL, but the inclusion of the Philadelphia Eagles seemed to turn some heads. Despite his extremely limited financial situation, Howie Roseman was still able to make a few shrewd moves this offseason, plugging some rosters holes that needed to be plugged.
The addition of former Viking Anthony Harris gives the team another veteran presence in their secondary, Eric Wilson should at least be able to stabilize the linebacker room for a year or so, and Ryan Kerrigan adds some extra pass-rushing prowess to the team’s already impressive defensive end room. That’s not to mention the acquisition of DeVonta Smith in the first round of the 2021 Draft, who many have pinned as a future WR1.
The Eagles are also expected to enter training camp with a fully rehabbed offensive line. Of all the things that went wrong in Philly during 2020, the lack of a consistent O-Line was easily the biggest issue. Even when Carson Wentz was making smart reads and smart throws, he was still getting smoked by defensive linemen 10-15 times a game.
Do the Philadelphia Eagles have a bottom-5 roster in the NFL? PFF thinks so.
Speaking of Carson Wentz, his departure is probably one of the biggest reasons the PFF crew remains so down on the Philadelphia Eagles at the moment. They’ve repeatedly voiced concerns in regards to Jalen Hurts‘ ability to succeed as a starting quarterback in the NFL, and they’re not the only ones to do so. Just recently, Chris Simms of ProFootballTalk kept Hurts out of his top-40 quarterback rankings.

A bad quarterback makes all of the difference in the NFL, and well, if Hurts is bad in 2021, then it’s not too hard to envision the Eagles finishing with a top-5 pick.
Hurts aside for the moment, the Philadelphia Eagles secondary still has some major questions to answer. Nobody knows who the starting CB2 alongside Darius Slay is going to be, and Slay wasn’t all that great himself during his debut year with the Eagles. Even Avonte Maddox, who’s expected to move to the nickel this year, is by no means a reliable option. He’s repeatedly found himself injured, and hasn’t been able to replicate his rookie season form when healthy.
Don’t even get me started on the depth at corner either.
The core of the Eagles roster is also extremely old, especially across the offensive and defensive lines. One big injury to someone like Jason Kelce or Fletcher Cox, and the team is going to be in a whole world of trouble.
We’ll see how things shake up during the season, but I’d personally lean towards the Eagles having the 9th or 10th worst roster in the NFL, as opposed to the 4th. I definitely believe they’re going to be a bad football team in 2021, but likely not bad enough to contend for a top-3 draft pick.
