The Philadelphia Phillies might not need any external help moving forward now that Luke Williams is in town (this is a joke), but the general consensus from the moment Dave Dombrowski was anointed president this past winter is that he plans to spend some serious cash during the 2022 offseason.

With big contracts like Andrew McCutchen and Odubel Herrera likely coming off the books, the Phillies are going to have anywhere from $40 to $60 million to spend on new players.

Some good news for the Phillies regarding future free agency targets.

A free agent class that’s headlined by some of the better offensive players in the game right now, the Phillies got some good news earlier this week in regards to the availability of two potential targets:

Trevor Story, SS

Set to be one of the “big fish” in this year’s upcoming free agency class, Trevor Story is a 2x All-Star and a 2x Silver Slugger who possess a career WAR north of 23. Not only would Story represent a key middle-of-the order bat for Philadelphia, but he also plays one of the more important positions on the diamond, a position that the Phillies are still uncertain at following swift defensive regressions from the likes of Jean Segura and Didi Gregorius.

More from Section 215

While it always seemed likely that Story would opt towards hitting the open market this winter, especially following the departure of former teammate Nolan Arenado, things were made official this week in a recent report by Patrick Saunders of The Denver Post.

It was reported that Story has no intentions of re-upping with the Colorado Rockies this season, and that the two sides haven’t had discussions in regards to a longterm extension since way back in February.

If Dave Dombrowski wants to pursue one of the top-tier FA shortstops this winter (something that was reported earlier this year), then Story would likely be near the top of his list.
