Philadelphia Eagles: 5 players fighting for a contract extension in 2021
By David Esser
Ah yes, the infamous “contract year.” A time for players to prove if they’re worth extending, or if they’re better suited for a trip to free agency. With the Philadelphia Eagles launching a new rebuild around the likes of Nick Sirianni and Jalen Hurts, there are a handful of players who were drafted a few years ago who are looking for a second deal.
Some of these players feel destined for an extension at some point this year, while others are likely going to have to earn it.
Taking a look at some Philadelphia Eagles players who are gunning for an extension this season:
Avonte Maddox, CB
Drafted in the fourth round of 2018, Avonte Maddox has had an up-and-down Philadelphia Eagles career thus far. He flashed some serious potential during the team’s ’18 playoff run, only for his next two seasons to be marred by injury and inconsistencies.

He suffered a severe neck injury during the 2019 season, and then failed to hang onto an outside corner role this past season in 2020.
Heading into 2021, it’s still rather unclear what the Eagles have planned for Maddox. His best position is undoubtedly in the slot, but the Eagles are so weak at corner that the 5-9 Maddox may be asked to play boundary at times this season.
If Maddox ends up performing well, I could see Howie Roseman opting to keep him around for 2022 just due to how weak their corner room is at the moment. However, if he fails to stay on the field once more, or can’t find a consistent role under Jonathan Gannon, it’s equally as likely that Roseman just opts to move forward without Maddox.
A player whose future is very much dependent on his on-field performance.
