As I’m currently constructing this article, the Philadelphia Eagles offseason roster is full at 90 players. Following the addition of Ryan Kerrigan and a few other depth offensive linemen, the team has all the guys they’re expecting to carry into training camp.

However, according to some reports that circulated from Jeff McLane earlier this month, it looks like longtime Eagles starter Zach Ertz isn’t planning to play for Philly in 2021. He remains insistent that he wants to be moved this offseason, with a trade or release still possible.

If that were to happen, the Eagles tight end room would be glaringly bare. Outside of Dallas Goedert, the team would be relying on a mix of practice squad players, UDFAs, and college QBs to round out the position group – not ideal.

If Ertz were to be traded/released over the coming weeks, there’s still some free agents out there worth tossing a one-year contract at to hold down the TE2 job through 2021.

The Philadelphia Eagles still have some FA options at tight end.

Trey Burton

A name that’s been oft-linked to the Eagles this offseason, bringing back Trey Burton on a team-friendly contact makes loads of sense. His receiving skills would compliment that of Goedert, and he’s already familiar with Nick Sirianni.

Plus, Burton is a favorite amongst the fans. While morale appears to be up following the draft, there’s still a sense of “we’re going to be really bad this season” from a good chunk of the fanbase.

Re-signing a Super Bowl hero in Burton could reduce some of that negativity.
