Howie Roseman has had a tumultuous past year as Philadelphia Eagles general manager, and that’s putting it rather mildly. A majority of his offseason acquisitions didn’t pan out, the Eagles 2020 draft class was heavily scrutinized, the team only won four games, Carson Wentz got traded, Doug Pederson got fired, Jim Schwartz kinda retired, and the team brought in an entire new coaching staff full of guys who’ve yet to have a lot of experience in the NFL.

That’s a level of controversy that most NFL executives don’t experience across an entire career, nevertheless 12 months.

There were plenty of people calling for Roseman to lose his job following the disaster which was last season, however owner Jeffrey Lurie obviously felt otherwise. Sold on the idea that Roseman can recreate the success of 2017 around the likes of Nick Sirianni and Jalen Hurts, the longtime Eagles executive was given full power to trade away immediate draft picks for future capital.

While Roseman has made a handful of shrewd moves this offseason (signing Ryan Kerrigan, for example), the arrow still appears to be trending down when it comes to his tenure as Philadelphia Eagles general manager. His teams haven’t been very good post-2017, and the decision to value Hurts over the already established Wentz could go down as a historically bad one if Hurts doesn’t look like a franchise caliber quarterback this season.

However, at least one rival GM still thinks very highly of Roseman and what he brings to the table as an NFL executive.

In a recent podcast with Ross Tucker, Cleveland Browns GM Andrew Berry actually named Roseman as the best GM in all of football:

Highlighting the complexity that being an NFL general manager carries, Berry mentioned Roseman’s ability to scout, manage contracts, maintain relationships, and overall succeed in day-to-day operations.

Do the Philadelphia Eagles really have the best GM in the NFL?

Before even assessing what Berry said, it’s worth mentioning that he was the Eagles VP of Football Operations during the 2019 season. A former understudy to Roseman, it’s obviously hard to imagine he’d ever come out and publicly bash Roseman. However, naming him as the best in the league is still rather lofty praise for a guy coming off a four-win season.

Berry is probably correct in his assessment of Roseman being an elite contract manager, but the rest of his claims aren’t as indisputable. Howie has really struggled to consistently find difference makers in the NFL Draft, and his lack of “people skills” was highly documented this past offseason.

Multiple reports dropped revealing that both Wentz and Doug Pederson were largely fed up with Roseman, leading to their premature departures.

Berry is correct to say that a general manager job in the NFL is more complex than fans would like to make it out to be, but his claim of Roseman being the best in the entire league is just a tad rich. Roseman isn’t as bad as Eagles fans have made him out to be when compared to some of the other poorly run organizations around the NFL, but by no means has he enjoyed an abundance of success since being named the Eagles GM.
