Philadelphia Eagles: Miles Sanders’ fantasy football status is in jeopardy
By David Esser
After a lackluster season from the partnership of Miles Sanders and Boston Scott in 2020, the Philadelphia Eagles have been hard at work this offseason retooling their running back room.
First they drafted standout Memphis RB Kenneth Gainwell in the fifth round, and now they’ve followed that up with the addition of Kerryon Johnson via the waiver wire. While neither player is going to realistically “push” Sanders for RB1 duties, you’re definitely looking at a situation where Sanders’ workload is set for a reduction moving forward.
For what it’s worth, this is absolutely the right plan of attack for the Eagles from a “football perspective.” Sanders struggled last year in his attempt to assume three-down running back duties, with his pass protection and receiving production both taking a noticeable step backwards.
Both Gainwell and Johnson should help out in the pass protection conversation, and Gainwell in particular has the makings of someone who can blossom into a borderline elite receiving back.

Philadelphia Eagles RB Miles Sanders’ fantasy value is trending down.
With that said, from a fantasy football point of view, the introduction of two new solid RBs spells bad news for Sanders. His touches will almost undoubtedly decrease in 2021, and there’s always the potential for guys to “vulture” touchdowns around the goal line.
Sanders was a guy people were targeting in the first and second round of fantasy drafts leading into this past season, now he might be more of a round three/round four type of target.
I’m no fantasy football expert, but I did win my fantasy league rather comfortably last season so like… ¯\_(ツ)_/¯
The initial reaction on Friday afternoon of Johnson being some sort of huge addition was excessive. Sanders is still going to be the feature back and Gainwell will likely be Nick Sirianni’s go-to secondary option. But just from a pure fantasy football point of view, the Philadelphia Eagles new-look (and beefed up) running back room isn’t exactly great news for Miles.
Sorry if you have him in a dynasty league!
