Philadelphia Eagles: *sigh* Another story about a Nick Foles reunion

Is there anything more Philadelphia than suggesting a reunion between Nick Foles and your friendly neighborhood Philadelphia Eagles?

Sunny skies? Cheesesteaks? Companies that produce pretzels?

To some, Foles is the pinnacle of what it means to be a Philadelphia sportsman. He’s humble yet confident, a startup member of the community, and, oh yeah, a Super Bowl MVP that led the Eagles to the playoffs in three of his five seasons with the organization.

When Foles – who is 32 years old, by the way – ultimately decides to hang up his cleats and move onto the next chapter of his life, he will surely retire an Eagle and very well may go down as the final player in franchise history to wear the number 9.

But to some, the idea of having to wait that indiscriminate amount of time to see Foles back in Philly is just too darn long, so naturally, whenever the Birds find themselves in need of a little extra competition in the QB room, the idea of bringing back Big D… St. Nick becomes just too obvious.

Unfortunately, we’ve been hit with yet another of these reports, as if the Eagles couldn’t go a week without a little peace.

Nick Foles and the Philadelphia Eagles: A song as old as rhyme.

More from Section 215

On Saturday, Sportscenter weekend insider Jeremy Fowler suggested that trade talks between the Philadelphia Eagles and Chicago Bears concerning Foles are still very much alive, piggybacking on initial reports that the former Arizona quarterback could be headed back to the City of Brotherly Love in a trade for Carson Wentz.

To be fair to Fowler, these reports are far from uncommon. Even after Wentz was traded to Indianapolis, plenty of people, like PFT’s Mike Florio, and pretty much anyone with a Twitter account and reliable access to the internet have suggested a trade for Foles could, or at least should, be in the Eagles’ future. Considering the Eagles only have one quarterback under contract, and the Bears just signed Andy Dalton to be their full-time starter, getting Foles out of Chicago feels like a logical outcome, with Philly being his most likely suitor.

If that happens, great. But honestly, I just don’t care anymore. Don’t get me wrong, I like Foles as much as the next guy. Well, maybe not as much as some people, but I just don’t see why these stories keep popping up, especially now. Foles has no connection to the Eagles’ current coaching staff, never played under Nick Sirianni with either the Colts or the Chargers, and to my knowledge, has never even met Jalen Hurts. The two quarterbacks’ playing styles are different, and having one backup the other seems like a rather unusual decision for a team looking to install a cohesive new system.

The only people left in Philly with any real connection to Foles are Howie Roseman and owner Jeffrey Lurie, and outside of appeasing fans, selling tickets, and giving Sirianni a viable number two, I really don’t see how trading substantive assets for Foles, who will financially coat $5.3 million in 2021 if traded pre-June 1st according to Over The Cap, helps this team win now or at any point in the near future.

Sidebar:  You know, considering how most fans feel about Howie Roseman, maybe he does want to trade for Nick Foles to appease a segment of the fanbase who love to call for his firing. Certainly couldn’t hurt.

Now again, the Eagles do need to find someone to backup Hurts. No modern NFL team has ever entered the regular season with only one quarterback on their roster, and backing up 22-year old Hurts with a 21-year old six months removed from college probably isn’t an ideal situation. In that regard, targeting Foles makes sense. So does targeting Matt Barkley or Alex Smith or really any other quarterback willing to come in on a cheap-ish deal and help Hurts acclimate to his first year as a full-time starter.

Ugh, this is exhausting.

Next. Matt Barkley’s time in Buffalo could help Jalen Hurts. dark

In theory, I should be all about signing Nick Foles. People love reading and writing about the franchise’s only Super Bowl MVP, and that constant quarterback controversy would *spoiler alert* be great for Philadelphia Eagles writers around the world looking for consistently engaging content, but I just can’t. If the Eagles reacquire Nick Foles, great. If the Eagles don’t reacquire Nick Foles, I’m sure these rumors will pop up again in the not too distant future. But until that happens, can we just collectively move on? ‘sigh’ probably not.
