Prior to the NFL’s legal tampering period kicking off, a good chunk of the Philadelphia Eagles community had concluded that one of Jacoby Brissett or Tyrod Taylor would end up in Philly as the team’s backup quarterback (due to some coaching ties).

Well, believe it or not, that didn’t actually happen! Primarily due to cap space restraints (the Eagles just recently got under the league’s salary cap), the team was unable to land either veteran QB.

Jacoby Brissett signed with the Miami Dolphins to backup Tua Tagovailoa, and Tyrod Taylor landed in Houston as “Deshaun Watson insurance.”

Set to have just one quarterback on the roster when the new league year begins tomorrow afternoon, Howie Roseman and the Philadelphia Eagles now have to pivot their attention elsewhere when it comes to the backup QB position:

The Philadelphia Eagles still need a backup QB!

Alex Smith

2020 Team: Washington Football Team

Coming off a season where he miraculously returned from a leg injury that should have ended his career, Alex Smith is the perfect type of guy to bring in on a one-year deal to help “mentor” Jalen Hurts, or some other rookie QB taken at the top of the draft.

Smith is a 3x Pro Bowler who had his best years under Andy Reid with the Kansas City Chiefs, which gives the Eagles an obvious connection to the 14 year veteran.

Smith doesn’t offer a whole lot of upside when it comes to actually playing the QB position (34.8 QBR last season), but his presence in the locker room would be the main reason to hand him a contract.

A very “low-risk” addition if the Eagles are looking to avoid any further QB controversies later down the road.
