5 free agents that could still be of interest to the Philadelphia Phillies

While Spring Training has in fact begun, the MLB’s free agency pool is still filled to the brim with all sorts of major league quality talent. Players that could immediately enter the Philadelphia Phillies organization and earn themselves a significant role, even if they’re a few days behind in terms of preparation.

Back in 2019, pitchers Dallas Keuchel and  Craig Kimbrel didn’t sign until well into the regular season, two names that the Phillies were repeatedly linked to at the time. It’s not completely unheard of for teams to sign players super deep into the free agency process.

Even with the Phillies pressed up against the league’s salary cap, Dave Dombrowski has never been one to shy away from handing out a couple extra million here or there. Throw in the fact that a lot of the currently available free agents are likely just looking for a job, and there’s a pathway to making some significant, cheap-ish upgrades.

Still plenty of free agents for the Philadelphia Phillies to throw money at.

Even with the additions of Archie Bradley, Brandon Kintzler, Jose Alvarado, and Tony Watson, the Philadelphia Phillies bullpen is still far from being complete. They’re banking on bounce-back years from a handful of arms, and a lot of these veterans who were signed to minor-league contracts still have to “win a job” during Spring Training.

If the Phillies are looking to plug in one more reliable piece to their previously league-worst bullpen, Shane Greene would be a fine addition.

Coming off back to back seasons with an ERA in the 2.00s, Greene has established himself as one of the better relievers in the sport at the moment. He was an All-Star back in 2019, and then played a key role for Atlanta this past season during their NLCS run.

All signs point to Greene re-signing with the Braves following their inability to land free agent reliever Trevor Rosenthal, but Dombrowski could definitely lure him to Philly if the price is right.
