Pitchers and catchers reported on Wednesday morning, which means Philadelphia Phillies baseball is all but back. Spring Training is always an intriguing time of year, but this year’s camp session feels especially exciting. Not only are the Phillies welcoming a large number of new names to the mix, but they’re also expected to encourage open competitions at a handful of position groups.

Right off the bat, the group that comes to mind first is that of the starting rotation. While the Phillies didn’t acquire any big-name starters this offseason, they brought in depth upon depth. Free agents Chase Anderson and Matt Moore were signed to one-year deals, Vince Velasquez was retained, a tenured veteran in Ivan Nova was inked to a minor league contract, and of course Spencer Howard is still in town.

With Aaron Nola, Zack Wheeler, and Zach Eflin set to hold down the first three spots in the rotation, the two back-end gigs are supposedly up for grabs. All five of the above mentioned names will be competing for the final two rotation spots, which should hopefully bring out the best in each and every pitcher.

The Philadelphia Phillies’ spring will be highlighted by competition.

Moving onto the bullpen, the Philadelphia Phillies added even more depth. While Archie Bradley was the only reliever to be handed a major league contract in free agency, the minor leagues are now rich with veteran talent looking to crack the official roster. Brandon Kintzler, Tony Watson, and Hector Rondon are all names to keep an eye on during Spring Training this year.

Additionally, guys like Sam Coonrod and Jose Alvarado were acquired via trade early on in the offseason, and there’s still some solid in-house options like Connor Brogdon, JoJo Romero, and Ranger Suarez who will be battling for roles.

Tons and tons and tons of competition.

On the offensive side of the ball, the outfield is where a majority of the battling will take place this spring. Adam Haseley, Scott Kingery, and Roman Quinn are all set to compete for reps out in CF, while someone like Matt Joyce looks to crack the roster as a corner outfielder.

Former #1 overall pick Mickey Moniak could also make a bid to see some main roster action this season should he show up to camp in elite hitting shape.

Even Odubel Herrera – a surprise inclusion to the team’s mini camp – could see an extended look at CF down in Clearwater.

In the past, the Philadelphia Phillies have really struggled when it came to their depth. Having so many bodies and so much competition going down in Spring Training should only prove to help the team get ready for the regular season. Ultimately speaking, guys will rise to the top and take command of some main roster roles.
