The Philadelphia Eagles are running out of time to make a QB decision
By David Esser
As I’m writing this, nothing is quite certain when it comes to Carson Wentz‘ future with the Philadelphia Eagles. Intense rumors continue to swirl left and right, but if we’re being completely honest, nobody knows what Carson Wentz is thinking…except Carson Wentz.
With that said, it’s not too challenging to read between the lines in terms of how things are playing out between Wentz and the Eagles. The former #2 overall pick is obviously not thrilled in the direction that the organization has been headed as of late, and 2020 may have been the tipping point. Not only did the team opt to replace Wentz with Jalen Hurts late in the season (who they probably shouldn’t have drafted in the first place), but they also failed to provide Wentz with an elite WR during the offseason (like Justin Jefferson).
Despite the big contract that Wentz was awarded, the relationship between himself and the Eagles is definitely strained. Even with Doug Pederson out and Nick Sirianni in, there’s a pretty easy argument to make in regards to Wentz justifiably wanting a fresh start somewhere else.
The Philadelphia Eagles need to come to a QB conclusion.
With so many teams in the market for a new starting quarterback this offseason (Colts, Broncos, 49ers, Panthers, etc.), it wouldn’t be hard to find a potential suitor.

Now obviously, Howie Roseman and the Philadelphia Eagles don’t have to trade Wentz. He’s still under contract, and the organization could opt to retain him in hopes of rebuilding the team around him and Sirianni’s new offensive-minded coaching staff. They could even keep him on the roster and force him to “compete” with Jalen Hurts for the starting QB job during training camp.
With that said, the Eagles do in fact need to make a decision – and they need to make it quickly.
On March 19th, $15 million of Wentz salary is set to be guaranteed. If the team intends to trade the quarterback this offseason, they should ideally get it done before that date.
Additionally, the NFL Draft is right around the corner. Set to pick sixth overall, the Eagles could definitely be in the market for a new quarterback at the top of the daft. If this is the case, giving the scouting department time to seriously evaluate all the candidates, and giving the coaching department time to prepare for a rookie QB, should be a priority.
Whatever the Eagles decision on Wentz ends up being, they do need to start pressing towards a solution. If Carson really doesn’t want to be in Philadelphia moving forward, a trade should be aggressively pursued over the next few weeks. If Wentz is okay with running it back alongside a new head coach, then mending the relationship with him becomes the new number one priority.
