According to Elliott Friedman, the Ottawa Senators have placed veteran defensemen Braydon Coburn on waivers. This is certainly an interesting development, and is something the Philadelphia Flyers should at least check in on.

The 16 year NHL vet spent parts of nine seasons in Philadelphia, before being dealt to the Tampa Bay Lightning for quite the haul back in March of 2015. That deal returned Radko Gudas, a first round pick, and a third round pick. The first round pick eventually was dealt to move up in the 2015 draft so the Orange and Black could select fan favorite forward Travis Konecny; not bad at all.

The deal worked out pretty well for Coburn too, as he went on to win the Stanley Cup last summer in Tampa Bay. He signed a one-year deal with Ottawa this offseason for a cap hit of $1.7 million, as the Sens believed they were further ahead in their rebuild and had a chance to be relevant this season. As things would go, that was the furthest thing from the truth as they are probably the worst team in the NHL; so it is not shocking at all to see them make a move to get younger.

Should the Philadelphia Flyers be checking in on Braydon Coburn?

More from Section 215

While Braydon Coburn’s possession metrics have plummeted this season (his Corsi through eight games is 42%), this may be more of an indictment on just how bad that Senators team is. Of course, I am not suggesting that Coburn is this fantastic piece, or anything close to the guy he was when he was with the Philadelphia Flyers. However, the Orange and Black have had their own issues on the blue line, and you can truly never have enough depth.

There is no telling how much of a market there will be for Coburn; but a veteran defensemen with a boatload of playoff experience is never a bad thing to add, even if just to be a presence in the locker room. The Philadelphia Flyers are a completely different team than they were when Coburn was traded away, and you would have to think the chance to play for a Stanley Cup is something that would interest him.

There are some familiar faces still with the team. Claude Giroux, Jake Voracek, James van Riemsdyk, Sean Couturier, Michael Raffl, Shayne Gostisbehere, and Scott Laughton were all teammates with the veteran at one time or another, so there is some continuity here as well.

Next. Philadelphia Flyers: Everybody hop on board, we are going streaking. dark

He would not solve all of the teams issues, but a reunion with Coburn could be fruitful for all parties involved. Personally, I am interested in this type of move; it will be interesting to see if the Flyers are as well.
