The Philadelphia Flyers finished off a brief two-game sweep at home against the New York Islanders with yet another overtime victory on Sunday Night. Kevin Hayes found the back of the net in the extra frame, securing the win for the Orange and Black 4-3; marking their fifth straight overtime win against those pesky Islanders.

This series looked a lot like the rest of the Flyers season so far, as they were outplayed for significant portions of the two-game series but somehow were able to walk away victorious. There were some good things to see on Sunday, such as Joel Farabee netting his first career hat trick, James van Riemsdyk continuing his scorching hot start as he added four assists, and yet another strong performance between the pipes from Brian Elliott. However, the Flyers will need to iron out the kinks if they want to continue to win hockey games.

It feels very much like the Flyers to get off to such a hot start to the year, yet still leaving their fan base confused and, well, upset at the product that has been on the ice. But at the end of the day, all we want is to win hockey games, and somehow this team has been managing to do just that so far here in the early going.

This now marks back to back sweeps for the Flyers and four straight wins overall as they now sit a balmy 7-2-1 (15 points) and tied for the East Division lead. Somehow, they even find themselves tied for the top spot in the ENTIRE National Hockey League with the Washington Capitals and the Toronto Maple Leafs. If you asked most Flyer fans, you would think this team was in the basement, and yet, somehow, they find themselves at the top of the league. Pretty incredible stuff.

The Philadelphia Flyers sweep the Islanders and have now won four straight.

More from Section 215

Now that they have been able to exact some revenge on those darn New York Islanders for bouncing them in the Second Round of the playoffs last summer, the Philadelphia Flyers will be looking for some more revenge. This time, it will have to come at the expense of the Boston Bruins, who took both games against the Orange and Black a little over a week ago, including a 6-1 butt whooping in the finale of that series.

That series in Boston has really been the only hiccup so far this year. Well, aside from an ugly 6-1 loss to the Sabres back on January 19th. With how poorly they played in Boston, the Flyers deserved to get smacked in the face like they did. You would have to think this team is hungry to make that series a distant memory; taking at least three of four points from the Bruins should be a priority.

Another ugly performance could hurt this team in the long run, as the psychological effect of having another bad series with the Bruins could be back-breaking. Remember, these teams are division rivals this year and still have to play six more games against one another. As they currently look like they will be jockeying for position at the top of the division, you can not afford to continue to drop points.

It definitely hasn’t been pretty, but the results have been there so far for the Philadelphia Flyers. They are currently off to their best start since all the way back in 2007-2008, when they also won seven of their first ten games. Sometimes it is better to be lucky than good, although you would think the luck is due to run out at some point. Either way, it has been a fun start to the season. Now let’s keep this momentum going against the Bruins.
