Jason Peters to play one more year, but not for the Philadelphia Eagles

Following a relatively productive 2019 season for Jason Peters, he was awarded with a one-year contract to return to the Philadelphia Eagles in 2020. Part of his return was due to starting RG Brandon Brooks going down during the offseason with an Achilles injury, and part of it was simply due to the Eagles longstanding loyalty to the future Hall of Fame left tackle.

Peters ultimately had to make the switch back over to left tackle following a biceps tear that second-year offensive lineman Andre Dillard suffered, but not before demanding a pay raise to do so.

Jason Peters likely won’t be with the Philadelphia Eagles next season.

Objectively speaking, 2020 was a really bad season for Jason Peters. He was routinely a liability on Carson Wentz‘ blindside, and (unsurprisingly) failed to stay healthy for the majority of the year. He only managed to appear in eight total games for the Eagles this past season, and most of those games were littered with constant subbing in and out due to fatigue, injury, etc.

During Peters’ multiple absences, Jordan Mailata stepped into the role as a far better option on the left side of the offensive line. With Mailata looking better than everyone expected, and Dillard set to return to action for the 2021 season, the Eagles genuinely have zero reason to bring back Peters in what would be his 13th NFL season. Because of this reality (combined with all of the injuries he suffered this year), many have speculated that “The Bodyguard” would finally hang up the cleats this offseason, and retire as a member of the Philadelphia Eagles organization.

Alas, that appears to not be the case. Making his first public statement since the season ended, Peters had this to say about his future:

“I’m going to play one more year and try to get me another ring…It probably won’t be in Philly. Unfortunate, but try to choose a team and try to get another ring.”

For the Philadelphia Eagles, I guess this can be viewed as good news? Peters was a major liability last season, and was a bit of a distraction off the field as well. Him “holding out” during training camp for a bigger contract upon being asked to play LT left a sour taste in some people’s mouths, especially considering how poorly he ended up performing at the position.

It’s hard to imagine there being a real market for a soon-to-be 39 year old offensive tackle in free agency, but you never know. There are a ton of really bad offensive lines out there who could in theory use the depth, or could value Peters being a potential mentor to younger lineman (thinking Jets maybe?).

Whatever the offseason holds for Peters, it’s pretty safe to say that his tenure as a member of the Philadelphia Eagles has come to a tumultuous end.
