Joe Brady could be the Philadelphia Eagles version of Sean McVay
By David Esser
Joe Brady would be a home run hire for the Philadelphia Eagles.
Sean McVay (the head coach of the Los Angeles Rams) gets a bad rep at times. He’s been deemed “overrated” by some, and specifically in Philly people have been quick to point out that Doug Pederson “owned” him in 2017 and 2018. However, regardless of what some fans of the Philadelphia Eagles may think, Sean McVay is a pretty darn good head coach compared to the rest of the league. And most importantly, he’s provided teams around the NFL with a blueprint of sorts when it comes to hiring head coaches.
While McVay did fail to win a Super Bowl back in 2019, he has a win-loss record of 43-21 since taking over as LA’s head coach. His .672 win percentage ranks towards the top of the NFL in terms of active coaches, and his offenses have ranked in the top ten every single year since he was put in charge. Super Bowl or not, it’s hard to argue with the amount of success McVay has had at the professional level.
Similar to that of someone like Kyle Shanahan (San Francisco 49ers), McVay has largely been this successful while dealing with average/below average quarterback talent, as he’s able to mask his QB’s deficiencies with elite play-calling and constantly evolving schemes. Jared Goff is an okay passer, but he’s nothing special. A majority of the Rams’ offensive success the last four years has come by way of McVay constantly staying one step ahead of the curve on the offensive side of the ball.

So where am I going with all of this? The Philadelphia Eagles obviously can’t hire Sean McVay.
Joe Brady, the current offensive coordinator for the Carolina Panthers, has been deemed by many to be the “next Sean McVay.” He’s an exciting young offensive mind who has rapidly climbed the ranks of professional coaching, and he’s currently being pursued by a handful of NFL teams for their vacant HC position.
The Eagles have already interviewed with Brady, and he fits exactly the type of mold that they should be targeting. Not only does he project to be a good head coach, but his commitment to innovation on the offensive side of the football is something that owner Jeffrey Lurie has repeatedly highlighted as a priority of his moving forward. Whether it’s Jalen Hurts or Carson Wentz under center moving forward, Brady gives the Eagles the chance to consistently have a top ten offense, year in and year out.
Going down the McVay/Shanahan route hasn’t resulted in rings for the Rams and 49ers quite yet, but it’s seen both their teams at least win the NFC, while consistently ranking towards the top of the NFL in terms of overall production. That’s something that can be sustained, which keeps the “championship window” alive for multiple seasons. The Eagles appeared to have somewhat lucked into their 2017 Super Bowl run, and are in desperate need of a mind who can relaunch them back into 5-10 years of constant playoff appearances.
Primarily due to his borderline elite offensive philosophies, Joe Brady appears to be that guy.
