Philadelphia Phillies continue to check in on big name free agents.

Coming just one day after news broke that the team has reportedly “remained engaged” with the likes of both Didi Gregorius and J.T. Realmuto, the Philadelphia Phillies reportedly have their eyes on at least two more big name free agents as well. According to MLB Network insider Mark Feinsand the Phillies have emerged as a potential suitor for closer Alex Colome, and according to MLB analyst Jim Bowden the team has also been involved with infielder Marcus Semien.

Hearing that the Phillies are at least interested in a handful of free agents is definitely a good sign, and could lead one to believe that Dave Dombroski and company plan to add some talent this offseason.

Staring first with Colome, he is essentially precisely what the Phillies need at the back of their bullpen. A veteran reliever with a plethora of experience closing down ballgames, Colome has been one of the better closers in all of baseball the last couple of seasons.

More from Section 215

He has a career ERA of 2.95, a career WHIP of 1.177, and he’s recorded 138 career saves. The right-hander is coming off back-to-back impressive years with the White Sox, posting a 2.80 ERA in 2019 and a 0.81 ERA in the shortened 2020 season.

Signing Colome would give Joe Girardi an established arm that he could trust to close down ballgames, which is obviously a major area of need for the Philadelphia Phillies at the moment. The ripple effect of signing someone of Colome’s caliber would also be immense, as it would allow someone like Hector Neris to slide into a set-up role (a spot that he’s likely far better suited for).
