The Philadelphia Eagles have reportedly moved on from Doug Pederson.

After weeks and weeks of speculation, the first domino in what projects to be a chaotic offseason for the Philadelphia Eagles has finally fallen. According to NFL Network’s Tom Pelissero, Eagles owner Jeffrey Lurie has decided to move on from head coach Doug Pederson.

Following a 4-11-1 season where the team’s franchise quarterback regressed to that of a backup, change was obviously expected this offseason. However, some were uncertain that axing Pederson was the correct route to go. After all, he’s the Eagles only Super Bowl winning head coach in team history, and had guided the team to the postseason three years in a row prior to 2020.

Ultimately speaking, it sounds like Pederson’s proposed “fixes” to the team is what led Lurie towards wanting something new. During Pederson’s end-of-year meeting, he proposed exclusively internal options when it came to filling the voids at offensive coordinator, defensive coordinator, and QB coach. Considering just how bad his assistants have performed in recent years, this was a move that reportedly frustrated Lurie greatly.

With Pederson now gone, it feels like serious change is imminent in the Philadelphia Eagles organization. Howie Roseman’s job status appears secure at the moment, but there’s the Carson Wentz debate that has to be had over the coming weeks. Is he the team’s franchise quarterback moving forward? Or will Roseman look to trade him to a QB needy team like the Colts or the Steelers.

The Eagles join the likes of the Chargers, Lions, Falcons, Texans, Jets, and Jaguars as teams currently in the hunt for a new head coach. With limited cap space at their disposal and minimal young talent on the roster, Roseman and Lurie will have to work hard to beat out their counterparts for one of the top coaching minds in the game.
