Current Philadelphia Eagles stars Wentz and Ertz might want to stay together.

Heading into the 2021 offseason, the Philadelphia Eagles are expected to undergo some pretty massive change. That’s expected, seeing as the team finished dead last in the miserable NFC East and mustered up just four wins. However, it’s not often that a team is expected to move off two former Pro Bowlers in the same offseason. Heavy rumors have circulated regarding Carson Wentz‘ and Zach Ertz‘ availability moving forward, with the general consensus being that both will be traded when it’s all said and done.

A handful of potential suitors will likely emerge for both players, as there’s always a need for quarterbacks in the NFL and Ertz’ status as a top pass-catching tight end in football didn’t vanish after one season. Howie Roseman and the Eagles could very easily auction of both players independently, taking the highest bids as an attempt to stock up on draft picks for their looming rebuild.

However, there’s a chance that the two (Wentz and Ertz) could try to facilitate a move together. Their strong relationship both on and off the field has been long documented, and their partnership has been somewhat “done dirty” by the Eagles organization as of late. Roseman and company refused to pay Ertz this past offseason (while simultaneously handing out huge contracts to Javon Hargrave and Darius Slay), and Roseman failed to adequately build around Wentz (instead using a valuable second-round pick on QB Jalen Hurts).

For Wentz, he’s in a unique spot where he’ll ultimately have some sort of say in terms of where he ends up getting traded to. A restructure of sorts will likely have to be in play, and that’s something only Wentz has the power to facilitate. Being packaged into a deal with Ertz would hypothetically make Wentz more open to the idea of taking a pay cut for a new team.

Ertz on the other hand would almost undoubtedly be onboard with the idea of following Wentz. The star TE was asked about the possibility of pulling a “Brady and Gronk” with Wentz, and he seemed pretty darn open to the idea. Ertz has had the best years of his career catching passes from #11 – the desire to stay with him makes sense.

On the flip side, Ertz and Wentz’ strong relationship could also result in the pair staying in Philadelphia for another few seasons. All signs point to Roseman trying his best to retain Carson, with him going as far as asking Ertz for “advice” in terms of what makes Wentz happy. Ed Kracz of Sports Illustrated had this to say on the situation:

"“Sources close to the team have indicated that general manager Howie Roseman talked recently to tight end Zach Ertz about how they can make things work with their disgruntled quarterback.Ertz and Wentz developed a close connection when Wentz arrived in 2016, so it’s probably not a surprise that the GM would try to leave no stone unturned in his quest to try to make things right with the quarterback he forked over a fortune to in the summer of 2019.”"

One of the things that makes Wentz happy on the football field? Throwing to Zach Ertz. If Roseman and the Philadelphia Eagles are serious about doing whatever it takes to keep Wentz around in 2021, circling back to Ertz and working out an extension would be in their best interest.

The possibility of both Wentz and Ertz being on the Eagles in 2021 feels extremely unlikely, but I overall wouldn’t rule out the possibility of this duo playing together next year – whether that’s in Philly or somewhere else.
