Two weeks from today, the Philadelphia Flyers play an actual hockey game.

Well it is finally (almost) upon us, the 2021 NHL season that is. After an eventful (to say the least) 2019-2020 campaign which saw the Philadelphia Flyers have their most success since 2011, expectations are high for the Orange and Black, and for good reason.

On January 13th, the Pittsburgh Penguins come to town for the first of a back-to-back with the Philadelphia Flyers, a scheduling oddity that will become rather familiar during this strange and exciting 2021 season.

Set to play 56 games, all of which for the Flyers will be against the teams in their realigned division; something that needed to occur due to restrictions in Canada that would have made this season impossible without the changes. In this division, the Philadelphia Flyers will square off with those pesky Penguins, the Sabres, Devils, Capitals, Rangers, Islanders, and the Bruins eight times a piece.

Each and every match-up with these teams will be a part of a back-to-back series (as mentioned above), where each team will play two games in the allotted home teams building. For example, the Flyers play two at home with the Pens before heading to Buffalo for two with the Sabres, and so on following that same format.

Again, expectations are incredibly high in the Delaware Valley, as many expect the Philadelphia Flyers to take another step forward this season, after falling in seven games in the second-round to the New York Islanders this past postseason. With an abundance of young players mixed with a solid group of veterans, backstopped by arguably the face of the franchise in Carter Hart, these expectations are warranted.

Currently, the odds makers give the Orange and Black the second best odds to come out on top of the Eastern Division at +300.

The full list of odds for the East Division are as follows:

  1. Boston Bruins +250
  2. Philadelphia Flyers +300
  3. Pittsburgh Penguins +450
  4. Washington Capitals +600
  5. New York Rangers +600
  6. New York Islanders +750
  7. Buffalo Sabres +1500
  8. New Jersey Devils +1500

These odds are brought to you from bet365, and are from 12/29/2020.

While the casual fan may look and think “How in the world are the Philadelphia Flyers second above the Penguins and Capitals?” Well, times are changing in the Eastern Conference. The Flyers are set to be a force for years to come, and for what it’s worth, the rivalry between the Orange and Black and the New York Rangers is going to be a fun one for the next 5-10 years – as I believe these two teams are the future in the East.

Now that we are two weeks away, the countdown has officially begun, and NHL hockey is on the cusp of returning. Let’s drop the puck.
