Philadelphia Eagles, please just lose this Sunday

It would be best for everyone if the Philadelphia Eagles took the L on Sunday.

I know that it’s anathema to ever actively root for your team to lose. But we should be realistic about things on occasion, like with the Philadelphia Eagles this weekend. When it comes to this contest, which painfully was flexed to Sunday night, I’d like to (sort of) borrow the old Al Davis standby:

Just lose, baby!

I can’t think of anything more Eagles-like than to win a meaningless game at the end of the year that can only serve as a distraction from the task at hand: a huge offseason overhaul. And I don’t want anything muddying the waters, along the lines of “Hey, Matt Pryor was really good in that last game, let’s keep him around.” No. Just no. This game shouldn’t play into any organizational or personnel decisions at all, and it would be more helpful in the long run if the Eagles just played their typical sloppy game and walked off the field as losers for the 11th and final time this year.

More from Philadelphia Eagles

I’m not calling for some embarrassing blowout in front of a national audience, because we are way past that point with this team already. Losing 38-7 wouldn’t affect any additional change. The team’s standard lousy play would do just fine in this case against a Washington Football Team that will be playing for the division title.

I’m also aware that some people have given this too much thought, saying that an Eagles win would help the Cowboys (or the Giants, I guess) sneak into the playoffs, thus hurting their draft position and setting them up for a potential first-round embarrassment against a theoretically superior opponent. While that win-win scenario is tempting, can we please just worry about our own team first for once?

I’m as guilty as anyone at experiencing more joy from the failures of opponents than from my own team’s successes, but we should get away from that type of thinking. Besides, that mostly applies when your team is good. When you’re in the dumps like this Eagles club is, you’ve got to focus on getting back to relevance. You can’t concern yourself with other matters.

The Eagles will tell you that they’ll play hard, and that they’d relish playing the role of spoiler, denying a division rival a playoff spot. But an Eagles win on Sunday would serve no long-term purpose, and it could push them out of a top-five spot in the NFL draft to as low as the #10 pick. Meanwhile, a loss could nudge them as high as #3. Just try not to think about the ways in which they could screw it up.

Look, you can totally be “Birds till I die”, but don’t be dumb about it. It’s fine if some good things happen in Sunday’s game, but actually winning would be worthless.

Next. Worst case scenario has developed at QB position. dark

Let’s turn the page on this awful 2020 season. Hopefully, with one final loss. Even though we all know that the Eagles will probably play their best game of the year.
