The Philadelphia 76ers just have a thing for social media mastery.

Ben Simmons. Benjamin David Simmons

When you think of Simmons, what is the first thing that comes to mind?

Is it his two All-Star appearances before the tender age of 25? His advocacy for the best food item available at Rutters, the Four’N Twenty Beef Traveler? How about the Philadelphia 76ers‘ 2020-21 City Edition jerseys that are just weird enough to be endearing?

Or is it the below emoji?

More from Section 215

Yeah, to paraphrase Keanu Reeves’ John Wick, I’m thinking that’s it.

The emoji, officially called the “face with look of triumph” on Twitter, has been a staple of Simmons’ social media presence since 2019, with the earliest non-deleted example dating back to January 15th of that year. Whether posted alone, at the end of a motivational text, or as the caption for a picture, the emoji has become ubiquitous with the 24-year-old superstar and a bit of a rallying cry for his legions of adoring fans.

If you’re the lucky purveyor of a Twitter account with any sort of following, simply posting the emoji will instantly generate a small windfall of likes, with many a reply parroting the small yellow face back atcha. Heck, I’ve even had the pleasure of seeing some accounts run triumph emoji tweet trains, some of which have generated dozens of replies.

Has Simmons cracked the code? Are we destined to see players like LeBron James finishing every tweet with a little crown emoji or a custom Mountain Dew-themed Joel Embiid emoji that becomes a fixture of any good Sixers fan’s game day social media palette?

Needless to say, as the NBA continues to develop into a more online league, this sort of thing is going to start happening more often, not less.

dark. Next. Joel Embiid proves his worth without playing a minute

Call Ben Simmons a revolutionary, a rebel, or just a savvy marketer that knows a picture is worth a thousand words – even if said picture is a small yellow dude blowing smoke out of his nose – but he’s clearly taken a page out of the Philadelphia 76ers’ social media playbook to become one of the NBA’s premier follows regardless of team affiliation.
