The Philadelphia Eagles have to shed salary this offseason.

It’s no secret that the Philadelphia Eagles have to shed salary this offseason. The team is projected to be anywhere from $70 million to $90 million over the assumed salary cap, which is like, really bad!

With that said, there are a handful of obvious money-saving moves that the team’s front office could make this summer. While the team won’t be able to hand out any big free agent deals, they should in theory be able to get back under the cap.

Here are a few moves that the team will likely be making, regardless of how these last few games play out:

Alshon Jeffery and DeSean Jackson gotta go.

It’s hard to even imagine this being a reality, but the Philadelphia Eagles are paying DeSean Jackson and Alshon Jeffery a combined $24 million this season. Considering the fact that this veteran partnership has logged just 16 total catches thus far, that’s not necessarily money “well spent.”

In 2021, this situation only gets worse. Jeffery’s contract rises up to $18.5 million, and Jackson’s up to $10.9 million.

The team was shopping both of these players heading into the trade deadline, showing their willingness to move off each receiver. Barring some sort of last-second trade deal in the offseason, the logical move is to just simply cut both Alshon and DJax. This creates a messy “dead cap” result, but ultimately saves the team some money. Moving off both veterans also frees up snaps for some of the younger receivers on the team, which is another added bonus.
