Philadelphia Phillies: These 3 things need to get done in the Winter Meetings
By David Esser
The Philadelphia Phillies have some serious work to do.
Normally, baseball’s yearly “Winter Meetings” are one of the major highlights to the MLB offseason. Interviews are conducted, hirings are made, trades are discussed (and finalized), and a plethora of baseball knowledge is shared between major and minor league organizations. While this year’s Winter Meetings will be happening online instead of at some fancy hotel, the Philadelphia Phillies still have a giant list of things to accomplish.
First announced on October 30th, the MLB decided to move the Winter Meetings to a virtual setup, as a COVID-19 related precautionary. This undoubtedly complicates things for front offices around the league, but it shouldn’t absolve the Phillies of decision making.
The team has a lot to get done this winter, starting first with these three Winter Meeting topics:

Properly gauge the JT Realmuto market.
As I’m writing this, it’s looking like the JT Realmuto market might actually be lining up (dare I say) favorably for the Phillies?
The Mets are reportedly more interested in James McCann, and the New York Yankees somewhat surprisingly tendered Gary Sanchez a contract. The Braves just splashed $25 million on their rotation and the Nationals have been the most linked to Kris Bryant and DJ LeMahieu, which *possibly* rules out two more potential suitors.
While it still looks bleak in terms of Realmuto returning to Philadelphia, the Phillies have to watch his market ever so closely. If his price tag starts to dwindle to what they deem “reasonable”, they better be the first team to call him up.
Poking around the Winter Meetings would be a great way to gauge who’s all seriously interested in the 2x All-Star catcher.
