As we get closer to the start of the NHL Season, here are three players still available the Philadelphia Flyers should pursue.

At the beginning of the free agency period, I highlighted five players that it made sense for the Philadelphia Flyers to pursue. As we are now several weeks into this process, some of those players have gone on to sign with other teams. However, there remain several bargain bin type of free agents still available on the open market; some of which could really help the orange and black this upcoming season.

Today, we are here to take a look at three players still available that the Philadelphia Flyers would be wise to kick the tires on.

3. F Michael Frolik

2020 Team: Calgary Flames/Buffalo Sabres

2020 Cap Hit: $4.3 Million Dollars

The first name on our list is 32 year old veteran forward Michael Frolik, who is probably best known for being a key role player on the 2013 Stanley Cup Champion Chicago Blackhawks. While he has never been a big time goal scorer, what Frolik brings to the table is a strong defensive game with the ability to chip in some offense as well.

This past season in his 12th year in the NHL, Michael Frolik appeared in 57 games, chipping in six goals and eight assists. Yes, certainly not eye popping numbers. As mentioned though, Frolik is not at all known for his offensive prowess. His biggest strength is his two-way game along with his strong leadership qualities.

Teammates have said to love playing with Michael Frolik, and it’s a big reason why he was dealt to the Buffalo Sabres at the trade deadline this past season. Buffalo was seeking a veteran presence; a guy who has been to the peak in the NHL, and a guy who could help the younger players bring their game up a level. While ultimately this did not pan out, it is not strictly an indictment on Frolik himself.

Fresh off a five-year/$21 million dollar contract he signed back in the summer of 2015 with the Calgary Flames, it is fairly safe to assume the Czechoslovakian forward will have to take a significant pay cut on his next deal; while also more than likely accepting a one-year contract. While his numbers were down this past season, prior to that, he had enjoyed a very consistent stretch where he posted double digit goals for six straight seasons; and hovered around the 35-40 point mark every year. Keep in mind, he also had two 20 goal seasons to his credit, granted they were much earlier in his career.

With the idea of a one-year deal in mind and the Flyers’ need to improve their bottom six forward group, bringing in a player like Frolik makes some sense. Keep in mind the orange and black do not possess a ton of wiggle room against the cap, so you would think any sort of deal to address their roster would be incredibly cheap. Bringing in Frolik on a one-year deal right around the $1 million dollar mark could make a lot of sense.
