5 deadline day trades that the Philadelphia Eagles should’ve done
By David Esser
Dante Pettis, WR
Proposed trade: JJ Arcega-Whiteside to SF, Dante Pettis to PHI
A second-round pick for the San Francisco 49ers during the 2018 draft, wide receiver Dante Pettis‘ career just never really took off the way it was supposed to. He played in 28 games for the Niners, catching 38 total passes.
He’s seen just one target here in 2020.
The 49ers released Pettis immediately following the trade deadline, after they reportedly actively shopped him on the open market (Pettis was claimed on waivers by the Giants). His name has been floated around in trade rumors for about a year now, with no suitors ever making themselves available.
Now that we know just how nonexistent the trade market was for Pettis, it would have been the perfect time for the Philadelphia Eagles to salvage some value on their own respective failed WR draft selection; JJ Arcega-Whiteside.
Similar to Pettis, JJAW has utterly failed to make an impression on the Eagles coaching staff, to the point where he’s just a blocking WR at the moment. Swapping JJAW for Pettis gives both young wideouts a fresh start, while costing neither the Eagles or the Niners any sort of added draft capital.
Pettis also has some experience returning kicks/punts, which is an added boost considering the Eagles returning woes as of late.
