Does Mohamed Sanu make sense for the Philadelphia Eagles?

Tuesday afternoon, in a rather surprising move, it was reported the San Francisco 49ers were releasing veteran wide receiver Mohamed Sanu. With the state of the Philadelphia Eagles wide receiver situation, it makes sense for the Birds to at least kick the tires. He registered one reception for nine yards in San Francisco.

Of course, Sanu would be nothing more than a bandaid; but you could argue he could join the roster and instantly be one of the top options for Carson Wentz.

The longtime Cincinnati Bengal and Atlanta Falcon also spent time with the New England Patriots in 2019 and is now seeking his fourth team in the past four seasons. While that is not ideal, it is not directly an indictment on Sanu’s ability as a pass-catcher.

For the longest time, it felt like Sanu was just reliable; I can’t think of a better word to discribe his game. Between 2013 and 2019, Sanu averaged 57 receptions, 639 yards, and three touchdowns per season. Again, this is not anything special, but keep in mind he has always been a complementary option and a darn good one at that. When he spent time with Cincinnati, he played second fiddle to A.J Green, and his time in Atlanta was spent as second fiddle to Julio Jones.

He has always played his role well and is documented to be a good teammate, and a role in midnight green would again be set as a complementary role to a player like Zach Ertz. Keep in mind, Sanu was traded to New England for a second-round draft pick as recently as last season, so it is not crazy to think he may still have some gas in the tank.

While it is never good to see a guy cut midseason, with the state of the Eagles’ passing game, they can’t really afford to be picky in terms of adding talent. There is also always the narrative of Sanu being somewhat of a “local” guy as he is from New Bruns wick, New Jersey, and played his college football at Rutgers. While New Brunswick isn’t South Philly, it is close enough to potentially play a role in signing with the Eagles’.

At the moment, this is all hearsay, as there hasn’t been anything directly linking Sanu to the Eagles. However, all options need to be considered, and when it was announced Sanu was being released, it only made sense to play the “what if?” game in terms of potentially coming to Philadelphia.

Though it may take a few weeks for the 31-year-old receiver to get up to speed if he does join the Philadelphia Eagles, at this point, they can use all the help they can get. While adding Mohamed Sanu certainly wouldn’t put the Birds’ over the top, it sure could help this offense getting a proven pass catcher.
