10 quick thoughts on the Philadelphia Eagles Week 3 TIE with the Bengals.

The Philadelphia Eagles tied (yes tied) their Week 3 matchup with the Cincinnati Bengals. It was a super ugly game of football and there’s tons of blame to be passed around. However, for the moment, let’s just glance at some quick thoughts following the 23-23 draw.

Doug Peterson playing for the tie.

A lot of things went wrong for the Philadelphia Eagles, but Doug Pederson’s final decision to “punt for the tie” is going to end up as the biggest takeaway from today’s game. Pederson has long been known as a “gutsy” play caller, but that was a massive sign of cowardice.

Bad stuff from the fifth-year coach.

More from Section 215

Carson Wentz.

For the third (!) week in a row Carson Wentz has effectively cost his team a victory. Wentz was inaccurate all afternoon long, throwing two interceptions and fumbling once (recovered by the Eagles). He finished the game 29/47 with just 225 yards and a touchdown.

He did rush for 65 yards though, his most since he suffered his ACL tear.

D-Line looked better!

I spent a lot of time after Weeks 1 and 2 criticizing the defensive line, and for rightful reason. The Eagles boast the highest paid D-Line in football, and they got thoroughly dominated against Washington and LA. Against the Bengals, they flipped the script, logging a total of eight sacks on rookie QB Joe Burrow.

DeSean Jackson is cooked.

Another early injury for DeSean Jackson, this time to the hamstring. The veteran WR has looked like a complete shell of himself during Weeks 1 and 2, and I doubt another soft tissue injury is going to help him look any better moving forward.

Nate Gerry is really bad.

Not a whole lot to say here, Nate Gerry just isn’t an NFL caliber linebacker. Would love to see what rookies Shaun Bradley and Davion Taylor can do moving forward.

Jalen Hurts fumbled.

Rookie QB Jalen Hurts got his first couple NFL touches during today’s action, and while he had a few decent plays, he also had a hilariously bad fumble on a read option with Sanders. The idea that Hurts could come in and instantly elevate this team to a Super Bowl contender is silly.

Logan Wilson should have been an Eagle.

Bengals linebacker Logan Wilson picked off Wentz just a few minutes into the ballgame. Friendly reminder that he was still available when Howie Roseman selected Hurts in the second-round. Sure would like to have someone like him out there at LB instead of Gerry.

This needs to be Jason Peters’ last season.

Today might have genuinely been Jason Peters worst career game as an Eagles left tackle. He got abused by Carl Lawson all afternoon long, and looked overall disinterested. Bad stuff from a guy who literally held the Eagles at gunpoint for a pay raise heading into the season.

Peters also went down to injury in OT, so his departure might be coming sooner rather than later.

Deontay Burnett sighting!

Making his 2020 debut via practice squad elevation, 21 year old wideout Deontay Burnett logged 3 catches for 19 yards. He’s better than JJAW, and he’s probably better than John Hightower as well.

Joe Burrow looking nice.

Props to the rookie, Joe Burrow looked pretty darn good today despite being sacked eight times. Him and Tee Higgins had a pretty nice connection going on, and Burrow didn’t turn the ball over once. Must be nice to having a young, exciting quarterback look better and better each week.

The Philadelphia Eagles are now 0-2-1 on the season, and things aren’t looking too much better moving forward. Morale has to be at an all-time low in the locker room, and the schedule gets seriously challenging over the next couple of weeks. Strap yourselves in, it’s going to be a very long season.

But hey, at least they can’t go 0-16 anymore, right?
