Avonte Maddox has been struggling big time.

According to PFF, there are three Eagles players who stand alone as being the worst performing roster members through two weeks of action. Nate Gerry (duh), Carson Wentz (also duh), and Avonte Maddox…?

Yes, you read that correctly. Despite two promising years of development in 2018 and 2019, and an offseason filled with training camp hype stories, the former fourth-round pick has been downright abysmal through his first two games starting alongside Darius Slay.

He’s been targeted 14 times, allowing 10 receptions for 137 yards. He’s produced zero turnovers, has missed one tackle, and has just one pass defensed on the season thus far. Jared Goff and Dwayne Haskins combined for a passer rating of 126.2 when targeting Maddox, making him the worst performing Eagles DB by a country mile.

Maddox’s early struggles are concerning, especially considering he hasn’t faced any truly elite WR talent just yet. The team expected him to thrive starting alongside Slay, as it would in theory allow him to avoid covering any WR1’s.

However, at least through the first two weeks of the season, Maddox has proven incapable of even guarding the likes of Van Jefferson and Josh Reynolds. With a matchup against Tyler Boyd and/or Tee Higgins looming, he needs to right the ship sooner rather than later.
