The Philadelphia Phillies may have this season’s “Rookie of the Year” on their roster.

The hype surrounding Alec Bohm‘s debut was pretty outstanding, and thus far, the 24 year old third baseman has absolutely lived up to it all. The Philadelphia Phillies rookie infielder has proved to be one of the best overall hitters throughout the entire roster, and has just recently started to pop up in some potential “Rookie of the Year” conversations.

Bohm debuted on August 13 against Baltimore, and it was clear from his very first at-bat that he was a different type of “special”. He makes solid contact almost every single time he steps up to the plate, and he very rarely goes down singing. Through his first 63 career at-bats Bohm is hitting .317, and his .867 OPS trails just Bryce Harper and Rhys Hoskins on the Phillies roster.

In this most recent four game series against the defending World Series champions, the Washington Nationals, Bohm’s excellence was once again put on display. Despite having to face both Patrick Corbin and Max Scherzer for multiple at-bats, Bohm finished the series with a total of seven hits, four RBIs, one HR, and one game-winning sacrifice fly. The Nationals elite pitching staff appeared to be no match for the rookies’ picture-perfect swinging mechanics.

Bohm also flashed a bit of elite defense during Wednesday night’s win, making an incredible diving stop, and then lasering a throw over to first from his knees. Bohm’s defense has been called into question quite a bit during his first month of professional play, so it really was a welcome sight to see the rookie make plays like that.

Bohm was praised for his power during the minor leagues, but it’s really been his ability to make consistent contact that has impressed the most in the majors thus far. He’s constantly putting the ball into play, and shows a willingness to use the entirety of the field (as opposed to just pulling everything like a lot of players in today’s modern era like to do). His first career HR was a dead-center bomb against the Braves, really showing off his ability to hit to all areas of the ballpark.

Bohm has really provided a sense of stability to the back-end of the Phillies lineup, as it forces opposing team’s pitchers to have to go through a gauntlet up and down the order. You have Hoskins, Harper, and Realmuto at the top, and then a .300+ hitter in Bohm sitting down in the seventh hole on most nights. It’s completely transformed the Philadelphia Phillies offense, making them one of the best in all of baseball at the moment.

With the current rate that both Bohm and the Phillies are on, I wouldn’t be surprised in the slightest if he saw a good chunk of National League “Rookie of the Year” votes at the end of the season. He’s impressed at pretty much every facet of the game thus far, and has proved to be a crucial starter to a team currently positioned to make the playoffs. If that’s not enough for some award consideration, I’m really not sure what is.
