Philadelphia Eagles: What Nigel Bradham was released? What a shame

Maybe Nigel Bradham shouldn’t have talked bad about the Philadelphia Eagles?

On August 7th, 2020, Nigel Bradham was signed by the New Orleans Saints.

At the time, that was kind of a bummer. Even on the wrong side of 30, Bradham was still a surer thing than the motley collection of mid-round draft picks, UDFAs, and bottom-dollar free agency additions expected to duke it out for a chance to man the middle of the Philadelphia Eagles‘ defensive front. Factor in the out-of-the-blue retirement of ex-Chargers linebacker Jatavis Brown and the Eagles suddenly looked like a team with razor-thin depth at a position of need.

And then, it happened. For… some reason, Bradham decided to slander his former squad of four years, declaring that that, well, why don’t you read it for yourself (shout out to John Clark for the transcript).

"“It’s definitely a different type of environment, a different culture, because the last 2 organizations I went to wasn’t really a winning organization. So when you come to a place where it’s known for winning and known for being in the postseason…”"

More from Section 215

Yeah, that certainly wasn’t going to make Bradham a lot of friends in South Philly.

Now, one can argue ad nauseam why Bradham’s comments are beyond misguided. The Eagles have more playoff appearances since 2016, more playoff wins since 2016, and oh yeah, more Super Bowl victories 1-0 when compared to the New Orleans Saints. Do you know who won said Super Bowl with the Eagles? Yeah, that’d be Bradham, who probably has a ring sitting in a dresser somewhere.

With Shaun Bradley balling out as a darkhorse potential starter at weakside linebacker (more on that here), T.J. Edwards gearing up for his first full season on the inside, and Davion Taylor still the highest upside option of the bunch long-term, the Eagles look fairly well set up for long-term success for years to come. Heck, Nathan Gerry is still technically on the roster, and may even earn an extension if he can continue to improve on a deceptively solid 2019 campaign.

And as for Bradham? Well, his bottom just got fired by the Saints, making him a free agent for the second time this month.

Bradham’s tenure with the New Orleans Saints? 17 days.

Granted, if the initial buzz around the web is of any indication, it doesn’t sound like Bradham will be out of work for too long, as Broncos and Browns fans are already clamoring to add the former second-round pick out of Florida State to their defensive fronts. If either does come to pass, Bradham will be joining a team that hasn’t been to the playoffs since 2015 and 2002, a far cry from the sort of winning organizations he’d like to play for.

Them’s the breaks, I guess.

Next. 7 UDFAs who could sneak onto the main roster. dark

In theory, I guess a playoff-caliber team like the New England Patriots, decimated by defensive opt-outs, could come calling for the former Super Bowl starter, but really, does that make any sense? Winning organizations are winning organizations because they don’t take chances on over-the-hill players eager to throw their former organizations under a bus, just ask the Philadelphia Eagles.
